You want an alt account on Discord. Maybe one for a work server, one for a streaming community, one that is just for testing your bot. So you hit register, type the same email you already use, and Discord throws "Email is already registered" at you. That is not a bug, and no setting turns it off.
Short answer: you cannot make a second Discord account with the same email. Discord ties each email address to one account at a time. The good news is that running two accounts is completely normal on Discord, and the official app even has a switcher for it. You just need a second email, and a little bit of organization so the alt does not become the account you lose in six months.
Why the same email does not work
Discord Support is clear on this one. An email can only be linked to one Discord account at a time. When you see "Email is already registered", it means another account already uses that address, and Discord suggests logging into that existing account instead of registering a new one.
The same rule applies if you try to move an email around. Changing the email on an account means the new address cannot already belong to another account. You also need access to the inbox of the current email to make the change. Discord Support says it cannot change the email on your behalf.
Phone numbers follow the same pattern. Discord says a phone number can only be tied to one account at a time. If you want to add it to your alt, you have to remove it from the other account first. Discord also does not accept VOIP or landline numbers for this, so it has to be a real mobile number.
Not sure which email your main account even uses? On a device where you are still logged in, open User Settings, then My Account. The email is listed there. Write it down before you start making alts.
The clean way to make a Discord alt
There is no trick here, and you do not need one. Treat the alt like a real account that you might want back one day, because you probably will.
- Pick a second email address you actually control and will keep. A second inbox with your regular provider works. Do not use a throwaway inbox for an account you plan to keep, because recovery and email changes need that inbox later.
- Register the alt with that second email and verify it from the inbox right away.
- Choose a username. If you are stuck, our Discord username generator can throw out ideas that are not already taken by half the internet.
- Give it its own password. Never reuse the password from your main. Our password generator makes a strong one in your browser.
- Turn on 2FA for the alt too. Save the backup codes the moment Discord shows them, next to the login they belong to.
- If you want a phone number on the alt, remember it has to be one that is not tied to another Discord account.
- Write down what the alt is for. "Bot testing" or "tournament server" sounds obvious today and is a mystery in a year.
One honest note on email aliases. Some email providers let you create extra addresses or aliases that land in the same inbox. Discord does not document how it treats those, so we are not going to promise they work. The safe route is a real second address you can log into on its own.
Switching between two accounts without logging out
Discord has a built-in Account Switcher, so you do not have to type passwords every time you swap. According to Discord's own FAQ, it works like this on desktop:
- Click your avatar at the bottom left of the Discord app.
- Select "Switch Accounts".
- Add the alt by logging into it once. After that, you can jump between accounts from the same menu.
The switcher holds up to five accounts. A few things are worth knowing before you rely on it:
- Some appearance preferences, like font scaling, can reset when you switch.
- Drafted messages are not kept when you switch between accounts. Send that long message before you swap.
- Your Privacy and Safety settings stay as they are on each account.
- Connections (like a linked game or streaming account) belong to one Discord account. If you want them on the alt, you add them to the alt separately.
- Discord's FAQ describes the switcher on desktop. If you mostly use the mobile app, check your app version, and expect to log out and back in if the option is not there.
What Discord allows, and where the line is
Having more than one account is normal on Discord. The switcher exists for exactly that. Plenty of people keep a personal account, a work or school account, and a test account for bots or server setups.
The line is ban evasion. Discord's policy says you may not make new accounts to get around a ban Discord placed on you, and its server rules guidance says using an alternate account to get around a server's restrictions is not allowed either. Discord's switcher FAQ also warns that when someone breaks the rules, Discord may take action on every account it can link to that person, including accounts added to the switcher. So an alt is fine for organizing your life, and a bad idea for dodging consequences. It can take your main down with it.
Keep track of both accounts before you forget
Here is how alts actually get lost. You make one, it sits quietly for a year, Discord asks you to log in again on a new PC, and you have no idea which email, which password or which phone has the 2FA. With a second email in the mix, that is now two inboxes to remember too.
For each Discord account, save the same set of details in one place:
- The email it is registered with, and the login for that email inbox.
- The username, since that is different from the display name people see.
- The password.
- How 2FA is set up and where the backup codes are.
- Which phone number, if any, is attached.
- A one-line note about what the account is for.
This is what LoginScout is for. Each account is a card with the login, password, recovery email, authenticator code and notes, encrypted on your device. Our guide to organizing gaming alt accounts walks through a simple naming system so you can tell your main from your alt at a glance. If you already have a setup key and want to see how those six digit codes are made, try the 2FA code generator.
If the alt or the main gets hacked
Two accounts means two targets. Discord token theft does not care which one is your main. If either account starts sending weird links or you get kicked out, follow our step by step guide on how to recover a hacked Discord account. Having the email, the backup codes and the account details saved ahead of time makes that whole process a lot shorter.
The short version
One email equals one Discord account, so your alt needs its own address that you control. Give it its own password and 2FA, use the desktop Account Switcher to jump between accounts, and never use an alt to get around a ban. Then save both logins somewhere you will actually find them. You can create a free vault for up to five accounts, which covers your main, your alt and a few game launchers besides.
Questions people ask
- Can two Discord accounts have the same email?
- No. Discord links each email address to one account at a time. If you try to register with an email that is already in use, you get the "Email is already registered" error.
- Can I use the same phone number on two Discord accounts?
- Not at the same time. Discord says a phone number can only be tied to one account, so you have to remove it from the other account before adding it to a new one. VOIP and landline numbers are not accepted.
- Is it against Discord rules to have an alt account?
- Having more than one account is normal, and Discord built an Account Switcher for it. Using an alt to get around a Discord ban or a server ban is not allowed, and Discord may act on every account it can link to you.
- How many accounts can I add to the Discord Account Switcher?
- Discord's FAQ says you can log into up to five accounts with the Account Switcher. You open it by clicking your avatar at the bottom left of the app and choosing "Switch Accounts".
- Can I change the email on my main and reuse the old one for an alt?
- Discord's rule is one account per email at a time, so once your main moves to a new address, the old one should be free to use. To change the email on your main, you need access to the current inbox, and the new address cannot already belong to another account.
