How to unlink your Epic account from a console (read this first)

Unlinking a PlayStation, Xbox or Switch from Epic takes a minute. Undoing it can take a year. Here is what happens to your skins and the safe way to do it.

An Epic Games account card with a console link being removed

Want to unlink your Epic account from a console? The button is easy to find. The part nobody mentions is what comes after: the console stops seeing your skins, a fresh empty account can appear the next time you launch Fortnite, and linking a different console account of the same type can be blocked for up to a year. Two minutes of checking first saves a lot of panic later.

This guide covers what unlinking actually does, the exact steps on the Epic website, the linking restriction, and how to fix things if you already unlinked and your locker looks empty.

What unlinking actually does to your skins and progress

Your Fortnite and Fall Guys progress and purchases live on your Epic Games account, not on the PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo account. Linking is what lets the console see them. Unlinking cuts that bridge. Nothing is deleted, but the console can no longer reach that progress or those purchases.

  • Your original Epic account keeps everything. You can still sign in to it with its email and password, on PC or anywhere else.
  • If you launch Fortnite on the console after unlinking, Epic automatically creates a new, empty Epic account for that console account. That is the moment most people think their skins were wiped.
  • Rocket League is harsher. Epic says unlinking the platform account where your Rocket League progress is stored resets your inventory and XP level.
  • Fortnite progress from two different Epic accounts cannot be merged, and Epic Games Support cannot merge it for you. Linking the wrong account is not something support can stitch back together.

Epic itself discourages unlinking for these reasons. If your actual goal is "play my main on a friend's console" or "move to a new PlayStation", unlinking is often not the right tool at all.

Check these before you press Unlink

  1. Confirm which Epic account holds your stuff. Sign in on the Epic website and check which email it uses in your account settings. If you have ever made a second account by accident, this is where it bites.
  2. Make sure you can open the email on that Epic account. Changes to linked accounts and the linking restriction need you signed in with access to that inbox.
  3. Cancel any active Fortnite Crew subscription on the platform account you are removing. Epic says you will not get new Crew rewards from it once it is unlinked.
  4. Write down the exact console login (PSN sign in ID, Microsoft account email or Nintendo Account) that is linked right now, so you know what to relink if you change your mind.
  5. Decide whether you will need to link a different account from the same platform later. If yes, read the restriction section below before you go any further.

Save the email of your main Epic account and every linked console login in one place today. When something goes wrong with linking, the first question is always "which account is it?", and guessing is how people end up with two half-filled lockers.

How to unlink your console account from Epic, step by step

Unlinking happens on the Epic Games website, not on the console. Use a browser on your phone or PC.

  1. Go to epicgames.com and sign in to the Epic account the console is linked to.
  2. Open your account settings and go to the Linked accounts page.
  3. Scroll to the section called Your linked accounts.
  4. Expand the console account you want to remove and select Unlink.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish.

Steam links are managed from the same Linked accounts page, and the same idea applies: whatever a platform could see through the link, it stops seeing once you unlink.

The once a year linking restriction, explained

This is the part that catches people. One Epic account can only have one linked account per platform. After you unlink, Epic generally will not let you link a different account of that same type (say, a second PSN account) until you remove a linking restriction.

  • You can remove the restriction once every 365 days, and Epic says it cannot be bypassed.
  • The clock is per platform. Using it for PlayStation does not use up your Xbox one.
  • If another account of the same platform is still linked, you have to unlink it first.
  • You must be signed in and have access to the email on the Epic account.
  • After removing the restriction, go back to Linked accounts, pick the platform icon under Link an account, and follow the prompts. Epic asks you to double check you are linking the correct platform account before you confirm, because it is a year until you get another try.

One more trap: if you unlink a console account and then relink the same one right away, a new restriction may stop you from connecting a different console account later. Epic's answer for that case is to contact their support.

Already unlinked and your locker is empty? Do this

Breathe. If you launched Fortnite after unlinking and see level 1 with default skins, you are almost certainly on the new empty account Epic created, not your real one. Epic's fix is to move the console back to the account that has your progress:

  1. Sign in on the console and register the empty Epic account it created, then verify its email address, so you can manage it on the website.
  2. On the website, unlink your console account from that empty account.
  3. Sign in to your real Epic account and link the console account to it from the Linked accounts page.

If the site says "Another [platform] account was previously connected with the Epic Games account", the restriction is in play. Either relink the original console account, or remove the restriction (the once a year option) and link the new one.

If it says the console account is already linked to another Epic Games account, that console login belongs to a different Epic account. Epic suggests opening a private or incognito browser tab, going to their account connections page, choosing the console icon and signing in with the console login. That shows you which Epic account it is tied to.

When the link was not yours

Sometimes people search this because they found a console on their Linked accounts page that they never added. That is a sign someone else got into your Epic account. Remove the unknown link if you can, then contact Epic support. If you cannot get into the email on the account anymore, you need to submit an account recovery request instead.

Our guide on how to recover a hacked Epic Games account walks through securing the email first, and if items have already vanished, read what to do when your Fortnite account is hacked and skins are gone. Getting stuck in a loop of security prompts on the way back in is common too, and we cover the Epic Games 2FA loop separately.

Keep track of which account is linked where

Almost every linking mess comes from not knowing which Epic account a console is on. A Fortnite main, an old account from a sibling's Switch, a Rocket League account linked to Steam years ago. On launch day it all blurs together.

LoginScout is a gaming password manager built for exactly this. Each account is a card with the login, password, recovery email, 2FA backup codes and a notes field, encrypted on your device. Put "linked to PSN: name, linked to Xbox: email" in the notes and you will never have to guess again. If you run more than one account, our guide to organizing gaming alt accounts shows a clean way to label them.

The short version

Unlinking is done from Linked accounts on the Epic website. Your progress stays on the Epic account, but the console loses it, and launching the game can create an empty new account. Linking a different account of the same platform afterwards needs a restriction removal you only get once every 365 days. Check which account holds your stuff before you click. And write it all down somewhere you will find it: you can create a free vault for up to five accounts in about a minute.

Questions people ask

Will I lose my Fortnite skins if I unlink my console?
No, they stay on your Epic Games account and you can still use them by signing in to that account. The console just cannot see them until it is linked to that Epic account again.
How often can I unlink and link a different console account?
You can remove the linking restriction for a platform once every 365 days, and Epic says it cannot be bypassed. Relinking the same console account you had before does not need that removal.
Why do I have a new empty Epic account after unlinking?
If you launch Fortnite on a console that is not linked to any Epic account, Epic automatically creates a new, empty account for it. Your original account and its progress are untouched, so link the console back to it.
Can Epic merge two Fortnite accounts?
No. Epic says Fortnite progress from two different Epic accounts cannot be merged, and support cannot merge it either. That is why it pays to check which account you are linking before you confirm.
Can I unlink my console without access to my Epic email?
Changes to linked accounts need you signed in with access to the email on the Epic account. If you lost that email, Epic asks you to submit an account recovery request first.
