Gifting
You cannot send gifts from the Item Shop without 2FA on the account. Turn it on before a friend’s birthday, not during it.
Fortnite 2FA
Fortnite 2FA is really Epic Games 2FA: you switch it on once, on your Epic account, and it covers you whichever platform you play on. It takes about five minutes, unlocks gifting and competitive play, and gets you the Boogie Down emote. Here is the exact path, method by method, plus what to do when the code never shows up.

Step 1
Use a browser, not the game. Sign in with the same Epic account your Fortnite progress is on. On a console, that is the Epic account your PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo account is linked to.
Step 2
Go to your account settings and choose Password and security. Scroll to the Two-Factor Authentication section, which lists every method with a Set up button next to it.
Step 3
For the strongest everyday option, pick Epic Authenticator or Authenticator App. SMS and email work too, and you can add them later as backups.
Step 4
Type in the code from your email, your text messages or your authenticator app. Epic switches the method on and sends a confirmation email to your account address.
Step 5
If you set up an authenticator app, Epic shows a list of 8-digit backup codes. Save them somewhere off the phone right now; this is the step people skip and regret.
Step 6
With more than one method on, open the three-dot menu next to your favorite and pick Make my primary 2FA method. Then open Fortnite and look for the Boogie Down emote.

Fortnite competitive events and tournaments require 2FA, so it has to be on before you try to register.
Creators in the Support-A-Creator program need 2FA on their Epic account too.
Epic hands over the Boogie Down emote as a thank-you. Save the World players also get extra Armory and Backpack slots and a Legendary Troll Stash Llama.
People search for “how to enable 2FA on Fortnite on PS5” or “on Switch” because they expect a switch in the console menus. Epic’s instructions point to the Password and security page of your Epic account, which you open in a web browser. A phone is perfect for this, even if you only ever play on a console.
Because 2FA belongs to the Epic account and not to the console, setting it up once protects the account wherever you play. When you next sign in to Epic on a new device, a browser you have cleared, or after more than 30 days away, Epic asks for a code.
If you are not sure which Epic account your console uses, check Linked accounts in your Epic settings before you start. Turning on 2FA on the wrong account is an easy way to miss the emote.
Each method has its own small quirks. Here is what to expect from each one during setup and at sign-in.
Epic has separate help articles for email codes that never arrive, SMS codes that never arrive, and an “An error occurred in our internal service” message during setup. That error message itself tells you to try again in a few minutes, and waiting is the first fix to try.
For email codes, check spam and promotions folders and make sure you are reading the inbox that is actually on your Epic account. Our walkthrough covers filters, typos and the console sign-in codes that are not from Epic at all.
If your account is a Cabined Account, the SMS option will not work until a parent finishes the account setup. Use an authenticator app or email instead.
To move SMS codes to a new number, sign in, open Password and security, click the three dots next to SMS, choose Remove Method and confirm. Then click Set up again, enter the new number, and confirm it with the code Epic texts you.
Moving an authenticator app works the same way: remove the old method while you can still sign in, then set it up on the new phone. If the old phone is already gone, use Try another way at the 2FA prompt to get an email code or enter a backup code, then fix the method once you are in.
You can switch 2FA off from the same page, but you lose gifting and competitive access, and Epic recommends turning it back on.
A backup code is your spare key. At the 2FA prompt, Try another way leads to an option for entering one of your 8-digit codes. Any one of them signs you in.
Keep them off the phone that runs your authenticator, because losing that phone is exactly when you need them. A printed copy at home works. So does a password vault: LoginScout can hold the codes in the notes on your Epic card, where you cross each one off as you use it. If you would rather keep your second factor completely separate from your passwords, a paper copy is the cleaner choice.
Use a phone or computer browser. Sign in at epicgames.com with the Epic account your console is linked to, open Password and security, and set up a method. It protects that Epic account on every platform.
Epic says the emote is granted right away when you enable 2FA. If you do not see it, check that you turned on 2FA on the same Epic account your console uses.
Yes. Epic lists Google Authenticator, LastPass Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Authy as authenticator apps you can use. Choose Authenticator App in Password and security.
Either your phone number’s region is not supported for SMS, or the account is a Cabined Account, which blocks SMS 2FA until a parent consents. Use an authenticator app or email instead.
Yes. Epic requires two-factor authentication on the account before you can send gifts in Fortnite.
No. Only you can enable 2FA, in your Epic account settings. LoginScout stores the login, your 2FA notes and your backup codes, so they are in one place when you need them.
