Valorant account recovery: how to get back into your Riot account

Locked out of Valorant? Forgot the username, lost the email or stuck on a code? Here is the Riot recovery path, in order, and what to have ready for a ticket.

A Riot sign in screen with a username field, a recovery email and a list of ownership details ready for a ticket

You open the Riot Client, type what you are sure is your Valorant login, and get "incorrect username or password". Or the password works, but the verification code goes to an email you have not opened since school. Valorant account recovery is not hard, but it goes much faster when you know which Riot path fits your problem and what Player Support will ask you for.

This guide walks through it in order, from the quick fixes to a full recovery ticket. Everything here comes from Riot Support pages. There are no shortcuts, and anyone who offers you one (for a fee, in a DM, on Discord) is after your account.

First, figure out which login you are actually using

A lot of "lost" Valorant accounts are not lost at all. The most common mix-up is between your Riot ID and your username, because they are two different things:

  • Your username is what you sign in with, on the website and in the client. Riot says nobody can see it except you and Player Support agents. Usernames are unique worldwide and cannot be changed.
  • Your Riot ID is the public name other players see, a game name plus a tagline after the #. You can change it, and changing it does not affect how you log in.
  • So if you are typing your in-game name into the username box, that is the problem. Sign in with the username, not the Riot ID.

Riot also points out the boring causes first: Caps Lock and plain typos. If you own more than one account, double check you are not mixing up the login for one with the password for another. If you have a main and an alt, our guide to organizing gaming alt accounts shows how to keep them straight.

Try Riot self-service before you open a ticket

Riot Support has separate options for a forgotten username, a forgotten password and a compromised account. Riot recommends the Account Recovery Tool first, because it can get you your username, your password or the whole account back right away. Work through it like this:

  1. Go to the Riot Support site by typing the address yourself. Do not use links from DMs, comments or search ads.
  2. Forgot the username? Use the Forgot Username option. Riot sends your username to the email on the account.
  3. Forgot the password? Use the Forgot Password option to reset it from the account email.
  4. Account taken over or behaving strangely? Use the Account Recovery Tool.
  5. If none of that works, Riot says to submit a ticket and Player Support will help.

Once you are back in, set a fresh, unique password. Our password generator makes one in your browser, and nothing you generate is sent anywhere.

When the email is gone or the codes do not arrive

Riot multi-factor authentication (MFA) can confirm a new sign in three ways: the Riot Mobile app, an authenticator app like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or Duo, and your email. If one of the first two is set up and still works, use it and skip the email entirely.

If the MFA emails go to an address you can no longer open, Riot is clear: your only option is to contact Player Support with a ticket. Riot lists "no longer have access to your account's email address" as a recovery case, so this is a normal request, not a dead end.

Before you give up on that old inbox, try your email provider's own recovery. If you can get the address back, Riot recovery turns into a normal reset. And if you think someone else has your email, Riot advises turning on MFA with your email provider too, because whoever controls the inbox can reset almost everything tied to it.

If Riot secured your account

Sometimes Riot notices suspicious activity and secures the account itself. In that case the first step is the recovery link in the email Riot sent you. If that link does not work, use the Account Recovery Tool or submit an account recovery request to Player Support. You may be asked to show that you are the original owner of the account.

If you think the account was hacked rather than just locked, read our full walkthrough on how to recover a hacked Riot account. It covers locking things down once you are back in.

What to have ready for a recovery ticket

Riot says you do not need to be logged in to send a recovery ticket, but you will need to verify an email address first. Use one you can actually check, since that is where the replies go. Then gather proof before you write anything. Riot's locked out help lists the kinds of details it may ask for:

  • A valid email address where Riot can reach you.
  • Your date of birth.
  • The social sign-in account, if you used one to log in.
  • Roughly when the account was created.
  • Where the account was created.
  • A transaction ID from a receipt for a purchase on the account.

You may not have every item, and that is fine. Give what you can, as accurately as you can. Search your old inboxes for "Riot" to find receipts and the original welcome email, which often answers the creation date question for you. If you guess, say it is a guess.

What Riot cannot recover

  • Deleted accounts. Riot says account recovery cannot restore an account that has been deleted.
  • Permanently banned accounts. Recovery does not undo a permanent ban.
  • Shared accounts get much harder. Riot warns that sharing your account can make it far harder to prove it is yours, so keep your login to yourself.

One more warning from Riot itself: Riot will never ask you to send your password or your authentication codes. If anyone does, in a chat, an email or a "support" Discord, it is a scam. The same goes for anyone offering to recover your account for money.

Make the next lockout a two minute fix

Most painful recoveries come down to one missing detail: the real username, the old email, the creation date. Write them down now while you still know them.

  1. Save the exact username (not the Riot ID) and the email on the account.
  2. Note your Riot ID and tagline separately, and which one is your main if you have alts.
  3. Turn on MFA with the Riot Mobile app or an authenticator app, so you are not relying on one inbox. If you are curious how those six digit codes work, try our 2FA code generator.
  4. Keep a receipt or transaction ID for at least one purchase, plus roughly when and where you made the account.
  5. Make sure the recovery email itself has a strong password and its own 2FA.

That is exactly what a gaming password manager is for. In LoginScout, each account is one card with the platform, login, password, recovery email, 2FA code and notes, encrypted on your device. Your Valorant card can hold the username, the Riot ID, the account email and the details a ticket asks for, so a lockout means opening one card instead of digging through five inboxes.

The short version

Sign in with your username, not your Riot ID. Try Forgot Username, Forgot Password and the Account Recovery Tool first. If the email is gone, open a ticket with as much ownership proof as you can find, and never hand anyone your password or codes. Then save everything somewhere safe. You can create a free vault for up to five accounts in about a minute.

Questions people ask

How do I recover my Valorant account if I forgot my username?
Use the Forgot Username option on Riot Support. Riot sends the username to the email on the account. Remember that you sign in with your username, not your public Riot ID.
Can I recover my Riot account without access to the email?
Yes, through Player Support. Riot says that if your verification emails go to an address you cannot open, contacting Player Support with a ticket is the way forward. Bring as much ownership proof as you can, like creation date, location and a purchase transaction ID.
Is my Riot ID the same as my username?
No. The username is your private login and cannot be changed. The Riot ID is the public game name and tagline other players see, and you can change it without affecting how you sign in.
Can Riot recover a deleted or banned Valorant account?
No. Riot says account recovery cannot restore deleted accounts, and permanently banned accounts cannot be recovered either. Recovery is for accounts you are locked out of or that were compromised.
Does LoginScout recover Riot accounts?
No. Only Riot Player Support can recover a Riot account. LoginScout stores the login, recovery email, 2FA codes and notes that make recovery much faster when you need it.
