Valorant account security: Riot MFA, ranked verification, region rules and scams

Your Valorant account is a Riot Account. The same login holds your skins, your VP and your rank, and it also signs you in to League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics. This page collects what Riot’s own support pages say about keeping it yours, from the Verify Account button in ranked to the email that says Riot secured your account.

Secure your Valorant account before your next ranked game

  1. Step 1

Give the account email its own protection

Riot says security begins and ends at your email, because whoever reads that inbox can request a password reset. Give it a password you use nowhere else and turn on the provider’s own 2FA first.

  2. Step 2

Enable MFA, then link Riot Mobile

On the Multi-Factor Authentication card at account.riotgames.com, switch on email MFA from the link Riot emails you, then press Activate next to Riot Mobile and scan the QR code. Riot Mobile is the method ranked verification accepts.

  3. Step 3

Type your password only on authenticate.riotgames.com

Riot says never to sign in with your Riot credentials on any other website. Skin giveaways, free VP pages and fake support forms all exist to get you onto a look-alike page.

  4. Step 4

    Review Connected Accounts

Check every Xbox, PlayStation, Google, Apple, Twitch or YouTube connection on your account page and remove anything unfamiliar with the minus button. A PlayStation account can only be relinked to the Riot Account it was linked to before.

  5. Step 5

Note your shard and keep one receipt

Write down your shard (NA, LATAM, BR, EU, KR or AP) and keep one VP receipt. Support asks for your Region of Residence on transfer tickets, and a transaction ID is one of the details Riot uses to confirm ownership.

What rides on a Valorant login

Skins, agents and VP

Weapon skins, recruited agents, your VP balance and Battle Pass progress live on the Riot Account and are shared between PC and console.

Two separate ranks

PC and console keep separate ranks and MMR, yet both sit behind one Riot login. A single stolen password puts both ladders at risk.

League and TFT too

Your Riot ID is universal across Riot games, so whoever takes your Valorant login also gets your League champions and TFT progress.

Your Premier phone number

Premier ties one phone number to one Riot Account. Unlink it and that number cannot go on another account for six months.

Ranked verification and the Riot Mobile requirement

To queue Competitive, Riot requires Riot Mobile MFA on accounts ranked Ascendant or above and on accounts it suspects are shared. If yours is one of them, a Verify Account button replaces Start, and ranked stays locked until you finish.

The rule went live in NA, LATAM, BR and KR on October 28, 2025, in EU on January 21, 2026 and in APAC on February 18, 2026. It never expires, so an account that reached Ascendant once still needs it after a bad streak. An authenticator app does not satisfy it. Only Riot Mobile does.

Riot’s stated targets are smurfing and stolen accounts. Its announcement says 80 to 90 percent of stolen accounts have MFA disabled, and that owning more than one account does not, by itself, trigger the shared-account check as long as none of them is shared.

When Riot emails that it secured your account

This message means Riot saw activity that strongly suggested someone else got in, and acted before anyone reported it. Riot may reset your password, reverse certain changes or purchases tied to the compromise, restore details the intruder changed, or require extra recovery before you can sign in.

Start with the Recover & Secure Account option in that email and choose a password you have never used elsewhere. Then check the email address, linked accounts, MFA settings and recent purchases, and report anything unfamiliar to Player Support. Riot also suggests securing your inbox and running a full malware scan.

If that option fails, use the Account Recovery Tool or a recovery request to Player Support, where you may need to prove you are the original owner. An Unusual Login Activity alert is milder: it only asks you to confirm a sign-in from an unfamiliar device or place. And Riot will never ask you to send your password or authentication codes.

Vanguard, cheats and your PC

Riot Vanguard is Riot’s in-house anti-cheat: a client that runs while you play plus a kernel-mode driver. Riot requires it to stay active while you play, and because it normally starts with Windows, switching it off means a restart before your next match. Remove it and the next VALORANT launch reinstalls it automatically.

Since June 2026, an optional on-demand mode called Vanguard Pre-Check runs Vanguard only while a Riot game is open. It needs Windows 11 25H2, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0, memory integrity (VBS and HVCI) and IOMMU switched on. Riot also notes that VALORANT, unlike League, already requires Secure Boot for Windows 11 players.

The account risk sits in what players install next to the game. Riot warns that malware can feed your login details straight to attackers, and that queuing with a cheater, known as bussing, can get you banned too. Treat any download promising free skins or a way around Vanguard as one of those two problems.

Region of Residence, shards and VPNs

Your Region of Residence sets payment options, currency, default language and your shard: AP, EU, KR, BR, LATAM or NA. Both come from where you physically were when you created the account, and you can only play with friends on the same shard. Inside it, a party leader or solo player can still pick a server with Server Select.

Riot only changes a Region of Residence to match where you really live, and warns you to be careful when playing through a VPN. After a move you wait 90 days before the next. Unless you move between NA, LATAM and BR, you lose current ranked season progress, match history and purchase history, while your collection, agents, account level and MMR come with you. Requests go through Riot’s Region of Residence page or a ticket with your username, Riot ID and tagline, email, current region and target region.

VP and skin scams that target Valorant players

Most Valorant scams sell something the game does not actually do. Riot’s store, gifting and billing rules make them easy to spot.

  • Cheap VP from a reseller. If a VP payment is reversed later, Riot automatically takes the balance back from your VP and from skins bought with VP. That content stays gone even after you pay off the balance.
  • “I’ll transfer my VP to you”. Riot’s gifting rules say VP cannot be sent from an existing balance. A VP gift is a fresh bundle bought on PC by a friend who has been on your list for at least a week.
  • A gift that needs your login. A real gift is yours to accept or reject, and an unclaimed one goes back to the sender after 60 days. Nobody needs your password to send you a skin.
  • Discounted prepaid codes. Riot cash codes only work in the region where they were bought, and each goes to one game in a single use. Redeem codes you bought from a retailer yourself, and keep the card and receipt.
  • Fake Riot staff. A DM or email asking for your password or a verification code is phishing, whatever logo it carries. Riot will never ask for either.

Riot’s rules on sharing, buying and boosting

Riot’s Terms of Service say you cannot share your account or login with anyone, and cannot sell it, transfer it or let another person access it. VALORANT’s own rules call boosting, where someone logs into your account to win ranked games for you, a bannable form of cheating.

Riot defines a shared account as one whose owner deliberately handed over the login so someone else could play. Its detection looks for signs that different people play the same account, and flagged accounts must complete Riot Mobile verification. Riot also bans accounts it is confident were purchased and used for boosting, and notes that sharing an account can make it much harder to recover.

Valorant on PS5 and Xbox

Console VALORANT needs a Riot Account, so link your main one. Skins, VP, agents and Battle Pass progress are shared with PC, while console rank and MMR stay separate, and crossplay covers Xbox and PlayStation but never PC. Riot says keyboard and mouse are not supported on console, and spoofing them gets you banned.

What to keep on your Valorant vault card

Riot asks for specific details when something goes wrong, and most players hunt for them only after a lockout. A LoginScout card keeps them together, encrypted:

  • The private sign-in username and the public Riot ID with tagline, labelled separately.
  • The account email, which MFA methods are on, and which phone runs Riot Mobile.
  • Your shard and Region of Residence, plus the date of any region change.
  • The linked Xbox or PlayStation account, and the phone number used for Premier.
  • One VP receipt with its transaction ID, and roughly when and where you created the account.

Questions people ask

Why does Valorant show Verify Account instead of Start?

Your account needs Riot Mobile MFA for Competitive Queue, because it reached Ascendant or Riot suspects it is shared. Activate Riot Mobile from your Riot account page; an authenticator app will not clear it.

Is my Valorant account the same as my League account?

Yes, if you sign in with the same Riot username. One Riot Account covers every Riot game, so the password, account email and MFA settings are shared.

Can I change my Valorant region?

Only to match where you actually live. Each change starts a 90-day wait, and outside moves between NA, LATAM and BR you lose current-season ranked progress, match history and purchase history.

What does “Riot secured your account” mean?

Riot saw activity that strongly suggested someone else got in, and acted first, for example by resetting your password or reversing purchases. Use Recover & Secure Account in the email, then check your email address, linked accounts and MFA settings.

Does Vanguard have to run all the time?

Normally it starts with Windows, and Riot requires it while you play. With Vanguard Pre-Check, PCs that meet Riot’s security settings (Windows 11 25H2, Secure Boot, TPM 2.0 and more) can run it only while a Riot game is open.

Can LoginScout recover a hacked Valorant account?

No. Only Riot Player Support can return a Riot Account. LoginScout keeps the username, Riot ID, shard and receipts Riot asks about, so your ticket is quicker to write.
