Every holiday season, gamers get hit with fake gift card deals, “free” V-Bucks and Robux generators, and trade scams. They all want one of two things: your login or your money. Here is how to spot them fast.
How to buy and use gaming gift cards safely
Step 1
Buy gift cards only from real retailers
Official stores, big-box shops, and the platform’s own site. Discount “resellers” on social media often sell stolen or already-used codes.
Step 2
Redeem codes only on the official site
Redeem Steam codes in Steam, V-Bucks cards on Epic’s site, Robux cards on roblox.com. Never type a code into a “checker” site.
Step 3
Never pay anyone with gift cards
Real companies, support staff, and sellers never ask you to pay with gift cards. That request alone means scam.
Step 4
Check the card before you buy
In store, make sure the packaging is sealed and the code area has not been scratched or peeled.
Step 5
Lock down the accounts you redeem to
Turn on 2FA and use unique passwords. A stolen account takes the redeemed balance with it.

Steam gift card trade scams
Someone asks you to “verify” a gift card or trade for one on a fake site. The fake login page steals your account.
“You won a giveaway” messages
Fake giveaways ask you to sign in or pay a small “shipping fee”. Real platform giveaways never do.
Cheap cards from strangers
A $100 card for $40 is either stolen, already used, or never arrives.
If you already got scammed
If you typed your password into a scam site, change it right away, turn on 2FA, and sign out of all sessions. Change it anywhere else you reused it.
If you paid with a gift card, contact the card’s company (Steam, Epic, Roblox, Apple, Google, and so on) with the receipt quickly — sometimes unused balances can be frozen. Report the scam to the platform where it happened.
