GTA V account security

GTA 5 account security: Rockstar 2-Step Verification, linked platforms, character transfers and scams

Your GTA Online character, its properties and its GTA$ hang off a Rockstar Games account, the login many players still call Social Club. Rockstar has strict rules about how that account links to PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic, and a wrong link can cost you a character as surely as a hacker can. This page covers both jobs: locking the login down, and keeping your character where you can reach it.

Rockstar account facts for GTA V players

Each row links to the Rockstar Games page it comes from.

Account GTA Online uses
A Rockstar Games account. Social Club was renamed Rockstar Games; your Social Club ID is now your Rockstar Games ID, with the same password. Source
2-Step Verification
An authenticator app on a phone, or a browser-based authenticator. Your Rockstar email has to be verified first. Source
Authenticator apps Rockstar lists
Twilio Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and 1Password. All offer cloud backup, and Rockstar strongly recommends turning it on. Source
Backup codes
Rockstar’s support pages do not describe any. For a lost phone or app, Rockstar points you to that authenticator’s own recovery steps. Source
Remembered devices
Once 2SV is on, you can choose to remember a device so it skips the code on future sign-ins. Source
PlayStation and Xbox links
One account per platform at a time, on the Connections page. Console GTA V progress is tied to your PSN ID or Gamertag, so linking a different one costs you that progress. Source
Steam, Epic and Xbox app for PC
Only Rockstar Support can unlink them, and every PC link change starts a cooldown that support agents cannot bypass. Source
Character transfers
PS4 and Xbox One profiles can move to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Nothing moves between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or between console and PC. Source
Shark Cards
Bought through the store of the platform you play on, with no refunds. Source
Bought accounts and keys
Against Rockstar’s policy. If anything happens to a bought account, Rockstar says it is unlikely to help recover it. Source

Lock down your Rockstar Games account before your next session

  1. Step 1

    Start with the email

Password resets go to this inbox, and so does the rollback link if someone changes your email. Rockstar wants an address from a well-known provider, with its own unique password and 2FA, and warns against school or work addresses you could lose.

  2. Step 2

Give Rockstar a password of its own

Use a password you use nowhere else. Rockstar recommends 8 to 30 characters, including an uppercase letter and a number, and suggests a password manager to keep track of it.

  3. Step 3

    Set up 2-Step Verification

Sign in at rockstargames.com, select your account icon, then Account, Manage Account and Security. Scan the QR code with your authenticator, or type in the Secret Key, then enter the app’s code and your password and select Verify.

  4. Step 4

Turn on your authenticator’s cloud backup

Rockstar’s 2SV pages describe no backup codes, so the app is your safety net. Every app Rockstar lists offers cloud backup, and Rockstar strongly recommends switching it on.

  5. Step 5

    Link your console from Connections

With 2SV on, link PlayStation or Xbox from the Connections page of your Rockstar account. Pick the PSN ID or Gamertag that already holds your character. Rockstar emails a confirmation once it is linked.

  6. Step 6

Check for changes you did not make

Rockstar tells players to watch for email changes, third-party connections and logins from devices they do not recognize. If you spot one, change your password at once and make sure 2FA is on.

What one Rockstar login holds

Your GTA Online character

Rank, properties, vehicles and GTA$ all live on it. Rockstar says a suspension may reset your characters with their progress, property and inventory, so never hand the login to anyone selling boosts.

GTA$ you paid for

Shark Card money survives Rockstar’s sweeps for illegitimate GTA$, but it cannot be refunded, and unspent purchased GTA$ does not cross between PlayStation and Xbox when you migrate.

Every Rockstar title

The same login signs you in to Rockstar’s services, Red Dead Online included, and Rockstar says violations such as cheat development can get an account banned from all of its titles at once.

How Rockstar 2-Step Verification works

Rockstar’s 2SV runs on an authenticator, on your phone or in your browser, added by scanning a QR code or typing a Secret Key. With it on, anyone signing in needs your password and a current code at the same time.

Two details matter more than they look. You can tell Rockstar to remember a device, which skips the code there later, so only do it on a device you own. And Rockstar’s pages describe no backup codes: if the phone dies, Rockstar sends you to the recovery steps of Authy, Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator or 1Password. Its advice is to switch on cloud backup or code sync now, so you can restore the authenticator to a new device later.

Getting error #0.200.4, “Incorrect verification code”? Rockstar says the code may be wrong or expired, or the authenticator may be out of sync. Check the device clock, date and time zone, and turn on any time sync option in the app. Google Authenticator on Android has Time Correction for Codes in its settings.

Changing phones while you still have the old one is simple: in Security, select Unlink under 2-Step Verification Device, confirm with a code and your password, then set up the new device. Lost the email on the account instead? Rockstar asks for a web ticket through its trouble signing in request page.

Linking PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Epic without stranding a character

Console and PC links follow different rules. On PlayStation and Xbox, links live on the Connections page at rockstargames.com/account/connections. You can unlink and relink at any time, but only one account per platform can be linked at once, and a PSN or Microsoft account can only be linked to one Rockstar account at a time. Because console GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 progress is tied to your PSN ID or Gamertag, Rockstar warns that linking a new one means losing your Story Mode and Online character progress.

Consoles can also connect through QR Code Sign In, where a PIN code entered on your phone or in a browser ties the console to your account. Rockstar lists your QR code, PIN code and 2SV codes as things never to share with anyone.

On PC, you cannot unlink Steam, Epic Games or the Xbox app yourself. Rockstar Support has to, and whether it will depends on your account’s status. Every PC link change starts a cooldown before the next one, and suspended or banned accounts cannot get links changed while the action stands.

Linked the wrong Steam or Epic account by mistake? Rockstar may make a one-time exception, but only if the Rockstar account has no gameplay time or progress in any Rockstar title. The cheap fix is checking which store account you are signed into before you first launch GTA V.

GTA Online character transfers: what moves and what doesn’t

Rockstar supports two kinds of move. A PS4 or Xbox One profile can migrate to either a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, and on PC a GTA V Legacy profile can migrate to GTA V Enhanced. Profiles cannot move between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or between console and PC.

On a new console, sign in to Rockstar Games and use the Migrate Profile screen when you first pick Online, or later the Pause Menu under Online, Migrate Profile. The old profile stays on the PS4 or Xbox One, but the two stop syncing, and unspent GTA$ you paid for does not cross between brands, for example from PS4 to Xbox Series X|S.

Slow down at the Review Character screen: starting a new character there overwrites the existing character slot. On PC the Legacy to Enhanced move works the same way, your Legacy profile is kept, and you cannot play GTA Online on either version while it runs.

Rockstar can also refuse a migration. Suspended or banned accounts, and profiles with illegitimate or too little progress, may not be eligible, so a character pumped up with modded money puts its own transfer at risk.

Shark Cards, money drops and modded accounts

Shark Cards add GTA$ to your balance when you buy them, through the storefront of the platform you play on, such as the Store in the Rockstar Games Launcher. There are no refunds, and you can hold at most GTA$50,000,000 from Shark Cards at once; the rest is credited after you spend enough to make room.

Money drops and modded lobbies are the other side of that coin. Rockstar says cheaters manipulate GTA$ and RP for themselves and other players, and it routinely sweeps accounts to remove illegitimately gained GTA$ and adjust RP. Shark Card money is left alone. Its Community Guidelines count cheats, hacks and third-party software used for an unfair advantage as cheating, and a suspension may reset your characters.

  • Modded or “stacked” accounts for sale. Buying accounts or keys from other sellers is against Rockstar’s policy, and it is unlikely to help if anything happens to one. Rockstar Support may also revert an account to an email that was linked before, if asked from that email, which is exactly what a seller can do after you pay.
  • Boosting and “recovery” services. Rockstar has a support form for reporting sales of accounts, items, boosts and recovery. Anyone who needs your login to raise your rank or get your account back is asking for the keys to it.
  • Emails that look like Rockstar. Rockstar says its emails only come from rockstargames.com, newsletter.rockstargames.com, store.rockstargames.com and support.rockstargames.com. Check the sender and links before you click.
  • People pretending to be you. Scammers contact support while impersonating players, which is why Rockstar often asks you to prove who you are by emailing from your registered address. Never post your login on a forum or social media.
  • Cracked games and shady downloads. Rockstar tells players not to download software from third-party sources, cracked games included.

If your Rockstar email gets changed

Whenever the email on a Rockstar account changes, Rockstar sends an account-specific recovery link to the previous address, from [email protected]. Clicking it rolls the change back, so check spam and other folders.

Lost the inbox itself? Recover it through your email provider first. If that fails, Rockstar Support may revert the account to an email that was linked before, but only if you write in from that previous address. It will not change account details for a request from an email that was never linked.

GTA V today, GTA VI next

What to keep on your GTA vault card

One LoginScout card per Rockstar account keeps the answers in one encrypted place, for the day you set up a new console or need to show support the account is yours.

  • Your Rockstar nickname, the email you sign in with, and the password.
  • Which authenticator app holds the 2SV code, and whether its cloud backup is on.
  • Every linked PSN ID, Gamertag, Steam and Epic account, and when you linked each one, since PC links have a cooldown.
  • Where your character lives: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or GTA V Legacy or Enhanced on PC.
  • Any email address that was linked to the account before, since support can only revert to one of those.
  • Shark Card receipts from your platform store.

Questions people ask

Is Social Club the same as a Rockstar Games account?

Yes. Rockstar renamed Social Club to Rockstar Games. Your Social Club ID is now your Rockstar Games ID, and you sign in with the same user ID and password.

Does Rockstar give backup codes for 2-Step Verification?

Its support pages do not describe any. If you lose the phone or app, Rockstar points you to the authenticator’s own recovery process, which is why it strongly recommends turning on cloud backup.

Why does Rockstar say my verification code is incorrect?

Error #0.200.4 usually means the code was wrong or expired, or your authenticator is out of sync. Check the clock, date and time zone on the device, and turn on the app’s time sync if it has one.

Can I transfer my GTA Online character from PlayStation to Xbox, or to PC?

Only from PS4 or Xbox One to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar does not move profiles between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, or between console and PC.

How do I unlink Steam or Epic from my Rockstar account?

You cannot do it yourself. Submit a request to Rockstar Support. Eligibility depends on your account’s status, and each PC link change starts a cooldown that support cannot bypass.

Do Rockstar’s money sweeps remove Shark Card cash?

No. Rockstar says GTA$ bought with Shark Cards stays on the account. The sweeps target illegitimately gained GTA$ and adjusted RP levels.

Can LoginScout recover a hacked Rockstar Games account?

No. Only Rockstar Support can restore a Rockstar account or a GTA Online character. LoginScout keeps your linked platforms, previous emails and receipts together, which is the kind of detail support asks for.
