Minecraft account security

Minecraft account security: Microsoft sign-in, Java vs Bedrock, Realms and scams

Minecraft doesn’t have a login of its own anymore. Java and Bedrock both sign in with a Microsoft account, and Minecraft Help puts it plainly: lose access to that account and you lose access to Minecraft. This page pulls together what Minecraft’s and Microsoft’s own help pages say about keeping it yours, from how each edition signs in to Realms, PlayStation links, kids’ accounts and the scams worth ignoring.

Secure your Minecraft login, step by step

  1. Step 1

Confirm which Microsoft account owns the game

Sign in to the Minecraft Launcher and select Java Edition or Bedrock Edition on the left. Play or Install means this account owns it; Buy Now means it doesn’t. Protect the account that actually holds your copy.

  2. Step 2

Give it a password you use nowhere else

Minecraft Help tells players to pick a good password, change it after any unauthorized use, and never share it online. If you reuse a password, one leak on another site can open this account too.

  3. Step 3

Turn on two-step verification at Microsoft

In a browser, open account.microsoft.com/security, select Manage how I sign in and turn on Two-step verification. Add Microsoft Authenticator or a passkey plus a backup email, so one lost phone doesn’t cost you your worlds.

  4. Step 4

    Print a recovery code

On the same Microsoft page, generate a code under Recovery code. Microsoft says to print it and keep it off devices you sign in with. Every new code cancels the previous one.

  5. Step 5

    Check your console links

On PlayStation, Minecraft links one Microsoft account to your PSN account. Make sure it is the account with your purchases and Realms, because unlinking later costs you that content on the console.

  6. Step 6

Get the game only from official places

Download Minecraft from minecraft.net or your platform’s store. Treat cracked launchers, “free account” downloads and mods from strangers as a risk to the Microsoft login you just secured.

What rides on one Minecraft login

Both PC editions

Java and Bedrock for PC come as one bundle on one Microsoft account, so a single stolen login costs you both.

Marketplace content across platforms

Linking the account on PlayStation unlocks non-exclusive Marketplace items you bought elsewhere. Those purchases follow the Microsoft account, not the console.

Your Realms

Realms sync across your devices through the Microsoft account. If a subscription lapses, Minecraft says you have 18 months to download the worlds.

Friends, cross-play and family settings

Minecraft Help lists cross-platform play, parental controls, social features and multiplayer servers among what a linked Microsoft account unlocks.

Java vs Bedrock: how each edition signs in

Java Edition runs through the Minecraft Launcher on Windows, macOS and Linux, and all three need a Microsoft account. The launcher is also the quickest way to check which editions an account owns.

Bedrock is the edition on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Android and iOS. On Windows and Xbox, the Microsoft account is the sign-in. On the others you also need the platform’s own account, and the Microsoft account links on top for cross-play, Realms and Marketplace purchases.

On PlayStation, select Sign in with a Microsoft account on the title screen, then scan the QR code or enter the on-screen code at microsoft.com/link on another device. That other device is where Microsoft’s two-step prompt appears, so keep your authenticator nearby.

Old Mojang accounts: the migration is over

Minecraft’s own pages don’t agree on the exact end date. The minecraft.net announcement says unmigrated Mojang accounts could no longer sign in to migrate from September 19, 2023, and that support stopped taking migration tickets that day. Minecraft Help says the migration grace period concluded on December 18, 2023. Either way, the door is shut.

Minecraft Help also spells out what was lost: capes and skins on unmigrated Java accounts can’t be recovered, a new account needs a new username (the old one may or may not be free), and old single-player worlds only open again once you buy Java on a Microsoft account.

So treat any email, Discord DM or comment offering to “migrate” or “restore” an old Mojang account as a scam. Minecraft has closed that process, and its support no longer handles it.

Realms: guard the account that pays

Friends you invite to your Realm play for free, and Minecraft says they don’t need their own subscription. That makes the subscriber’s Microsoft account the one to guard. A Java Realm is bought on minecraft.net with a Microsoft account and then managed on the Microsoft subscriptions page.

Realms only connect players on the same edition. Bedrock Realms cross-play across consoles, phones and Windows; Java Realms cross-play between Windows, macOS and Linux. If a friend can’t find your Realm, check their edition before you suspect their account.

Minecraft on PlayStation: the link that matters

PlayStation players run two accounts: the PSN account on the console and a linked Microsoft account for cross-platform play and Realms. Minecraft allows one Microsoft account per PSN account, and switching means unlinking first under Settings, then the Account tab, in Minecraft.

Unlinking has costs. Store purchases and unspent Tokens bought on PlayStation stay with the PSN account, but Marketplace items bought through the Microsoft account stop showing, other Minecraft games on the console unlink too, and Realms and cross-play end until you sign in with another Microsoft account.

Seeing “This account is already connected”? Minecraft Help says your PSN account is already linked to a different Microsoft account; sign in with the one named in the message, or unlink it. Then secure both sides with 2-step verification.

Minecraft scams that go after your login

Minecraft’s own pages flag these traps. The real free option is the official trial: Minecraft Help says the Bedrock trial gives 90 minutes of single-player Survival with no multiplayer or Realms, and the PC demo appears in the launcher when an account doesn’t own the game.

  • Accounts for sale. Minecraft Help says not to buy accounts from sellers, resellers, social media or friends. It breaks the Terms of Service and support won’t help with it later. “Free account” offers deserve the same suspicion.
  • Free Minecoins or Marketplace content. Minecraft says there is no way to get Coins or Marketplace content except through the game. Anyone offering them for your account details is after the account.
  • Requests for your password. Minecraft says its team and server moderators will never ask for your password, or for personal details like your address or phone number.
  • Sellers you spot. If you see accounts or capes for sale, Minecraft Help asks you to take screenshots and tell Minecraft Support. It says it investigates every claim.

Child accounts and family settings

Minecraft uses Microsoft and Xbox family settings for parental controls, even if your family never touches an Xbox. A parent creates a family group on the Microsoft Family Safety website or in the Xbox Family Settings app, then adds the child. Only the parent account can change settings, and the age that counts as a child depends on where you live.

Multiplayer starts off on child accounts in both editions. From the parent account, Xbox privacy and online safety settings decide whether the child can join multiplayer games and Realms, play cross-network with PlayStation and Nintendo players, add friends and chat.

On a console or phone, the platform’s parental controls apply too. Minecraft Help says the game follows whichever setting is more restrictive, so a block on either side wins.

What to keep on your Minecraft vault card

A good card answers the questions you get on a new PC, a new console or Microsoft’s recovery form. In LoginScout, that is one encrypted card holding the login and notes:

  • The Microsoft account email, your gamertag and your Java player name.
  • Which editions the account owns, plus the purchase receipt or rough purchase date.
  • Which PSN, Nintendo or phone account your Microsoft account is linked to.
  • Who owns each Realm you play on, and on which edition.
  • Your two-step methods and the date of your current printed recovery code.
  • For a child’s account: which parent account runs the family group.

Questions people ask

Do I need a Microsoft account to play Minecraft?

For Java Edition, yes, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Minecraft Help’s list marks one as required for Bedrock on every platform too, while noting some platforms let you play without it and need it for extras like Realms and cross-play.

Can I still migrate my old Mojang account?

No. Minecraft’s pages give September 19, 2023 (minecraft.net) and December 18, 2023 (Minecraft Help) as the end of migration, and support no longer handles migration questions. Capes and skins on unmigrated accounts can’t be recovered.

Does Microsoft two-step verification protect Minecraft?

Yes. Minecraft signs in with your Microsoft account, so turning on two-step verification at account.microsoft.com/security covers Java, Bedrock and your Realms at once. There is no separate switch inside the game.

Is there a legit way to play Minecraft for free?

The official free trial. Minecraft Help says the Bedrock trial allows 90 minutes of single-player Survival without multiplayer or Realms, and PC players get a demo in the launcher. Treat anything promising a free full account as a scam.

Why does Minecraft on PS5 say my account is already connected?

Your PSN account is already linked to a different Microsoft account. Sign in with the account named in the message, or choose Unlink Microsoft account and use another one. Unlinking removes that account’s Marketplace purchases from your PSN account.

Can my child join a friend’s Realm?

Only after a parent allows it. Multiplayer is off by default on child accounts, and the parent has to allow joining multiplayer games in the Xbox privacy and online safety settings or the Xbox Family Settings app.

Can LoginScout recover a hacked Minecraft account?

No. Only Microsoft can restore a Microsoft account, and Minecraft Help sends hacked-account cases to Microsoft. LoginScout keeps the details Microsoft will ask about, like your email, gamertag, purchase date and linked consoles, on one encrypted card.
